Our team at work always tries to do personal projects that help “bonding” outside of work. We’ve done several now but this one was maybe the coolest. We decided we wanted to make “Fight Sticks” so we could kick each others asses at MK and Street Fighter. Part of what made it so fun is that we all went in different directions with how we wanted to build.
- I built mine out of wood and wanted it to feel heavy and blocky
- Another member of the team built theirs as thin as possible
- The third member wanted a professional look so they bought a kit

I had access to my Dad’s workshop so I started making mine by looking at all the wood scraps he had. We finally found some that would work.

Next was cutting the angle for where my hands would lay, then sanding it so much. SO SO MUCH. SO. MUCH.

Finally had glued and sanded it enough that it took shape. After that I needed to make sure the holes I drilled would fit the joystick and buttons… Luckily they did

Now it was time to stain it. I picked some red-ish cherry-ish stain up at ACE Hardware, my favorite store? I stained it, sanded it, stained it, sanded it… forever… Then I assembled it back together and cleaned the wiring inside so it looked nice (that matters to me).

I ended up using the Brook Pi-Zero controller since it did everything I needed, planned on mostly using it with a raspberry pi and Nintendo Switch.

Specifically this one. Keeping it S I M P L E.

With everything done all that was left was to take a beautiful pictures to make others online jealous, then lose repeatedly to my teammates.
